Much of England has faced drought conditions during a summer marked by repeated heatwaves, but the North East has been spared water scarcity despite experiencing prolonged dry weather. One of the biggest reasons is Kielder Water, England's largest man-made lake in the UK, holding about 200 billion litres of water. Kielder Water opened in 1982 and was created by flooding multiple farms and homes.
Jonty Hall, then aged nine, was chosen to press the button to start filling the reservoir. "This is now my 37th year," he said, referring to his work for Northumbrian Water at the lake he helped create. Initially built to support the region's water-hungry steel industry, Kielder Water now ensures the North East is one of the most water secure regions in the world, according to Newcastle University hydrology researcher Dr Anna Murgatroyd.
Climate change models suggest the North East will see a rise in drought conditions by 2080 but remain more secure than other regions. Kielder Water is considered an example of best practice in water engineering, though experts warn climate change is making weather patterns unpredictable. Northumbrian Water says the region will have enough water for the foreseeable future but encourages water conservation to reduce pressure on the system.
Kielder remains a major safeguard, but saving water helps prolong its benefits.
